After
college Michael served as Assistant Executive Director at Golden Crescent Council
of Governments until 1975. On August 4, 1973, he married Michelle Gayle Mahan
from Austin, daughter of Leon and Elaine Mahan. They formed a partnership with
Jay Cliburn and started Cliburn-Stewart Builders. Stewart Rental Properties was
formed a year later. In 1979, he sold the building company to form Eagle Petroleum,
which exists today as MV Stewart Oil Interest. It is now a royalty company.
Michael
served on the Board of Directors on the Victoria Television Station in 1984. In
1986, Stewart formed Investment Real Estate with John Sharp and Gene Martin, which
operated until the decision to move to the San Antonio area in 1988 was made.
He subdivided Coletowoods, Kingwood Forrest, Sleepy Hollow and Thomaston Estates.
In 1988 full attention was put into land speculation, development and oil exploration
and following are subdivisions Michael built after moving to the Hill Country:
Oak Hollow in Hays County; in Bexar County he built Somerset Park, Majestic Oaks,
Braunig Lake, Hidden Springs, Scenic Loop Estates and Tamaron Estate; Stewart
Ranch, DeJoirno Ranch and New Braunfels Heights in Medina County, Zacody Acres
in Travis County; Circle C, Legend Oaks and Cross S in Zavala County; Dove Crossing,
Estates of Lakeview Morningside and Emerald Estates in Guadalupe County and Candelara
in Atascosa County.
In 1995 he joined
Joe and Joey Peacock to form Tri Electric and served as a director. The company
was sold in 1999. Michael owned half interest in Alpha-Omega Fiber Optic, Ltd.
His wife, Michelle, has been his partner in every venture.
Michael's
father, Virgil Stewart, sparked a lifetime of hunting and fishing interest for
him. Michael has collected magnificent mule deer and elk from Colorado, New Mexico,
Utah, Wyoming, Idaho, Washington and Montana using both a rifle and a bow. He
shot a world-class elk in Mongolia, where he lived in a village above Ulannbaatar,
in the foothills of the Himma Mountain just below Siberia.
Michael
has collected a large number of trophy whitetail deer from all over South Texas,
missing the B&C record book twice by less than 5 points. His in Pope and Young
Record Book for deer taken with a bow.
Michael
hunted Canada and killed a black bear and fished Alaska with his wife Michelle,
who decided she enjoyed salmon fishing more than trout fishing on the Texas coast.
In 1998, he hunted in South Africa, killing zudu, blesbuck, hardibeast, impala
and a gemsbuck.
He is also an avid
scuba diver, snow and water skier, golfer, tennis player, competition shotgunner,
and competes in bill fishing tournaments and has won heaviest sailfish in th 60th
Texas International Fishing Tournament. He also shot in the world skeet competition
in 1986 and won second place in AA World Shoot in 1987.
Michael
has been active in Alamo Safari Club, Mayfair Club, Mensa, Dominion Country Club,
Petroleum Club and has served as Director for the Texas Land Brokers Association.
Michael and Michelle currently reside on a farm on Lake McQueeney in New Braunfels,
TX. They have two sons; and, Zachry, as well as Cody and his wife Tyree all reside
in New Braunfels. The Stewarts enjoy their time in New Braunfels but look forward
to visiting their home in Ruidoso, NM.
